If you thought you were an expert in fruits and vegetables, this new species should give you a hard time. And for good reason, the Japanese horticultural company Suntory Flowars has presented a new fruit whose taste and bitterness are not so foreign to you.
No exotic or particular name in sight, but simply the name “lemon melon” and this for a very simple reason: it is round and sweet like a melon and acid like a lemon. In appearance, the fruit strangely resembles the shape of Spanish melons, especially with its entirely white interior.
To create this new fruit, the Japanese company looked at the different kinds of melons in the world. For five years, she will have conducted many experiments by mixing it with lemon until obtaining the ideal taste. Few farmers have had the opportunity to cultivate lemon melon to the point that they are limited to only five in the city of Furano in Hokkaido, an island located in the north of Japan.
This year was the first in which farmers were able to officially sell them and are hoping for a successful harvest of 3800 lemon melons which will then be sold in supermarkets in Sapporo until the end of August at an estimated price of 20 euros.
And to continue with the unusual dishes straight from Japan, remember this pastry shop girl who unveiled a birthday cake… made of sushi.
